Congratulations Ladies!

Cambuslang may be a small nine hole course but we produce golfers who fight above their weight. The Ladies team have proven this true by winning promotion to Division 1. I will need to check the Club’s history books to see if this has happened previously but to have both the Ladies and Gents Team be in Division 1 is quite an achievement. Well done Ladies!

A well deserved Congratulations to Cambuslang Golf Club’s Lesley Watson who won the scratch prize at the Banff golf week on Friday 10th July. Cream rises to the top and Lesley fought of a large field to win this prestigious competition. There is no stopping our Lady golfers at the moment.

Seniors’ Team Wins its Section

In a winner takes all match at Cambuslang on Wednesday the 8th. of July, Cambuslang Seniors’ Team won 4 to 1 against Lanark G.C. The winner of this match would win Section 4 and a place in the semi-finals of the L.G.A. Seniors’ Team League. Prior to the match, Cambuslang were 1 point ahead of Lanark and with 2 points for a win this made for a tense hard fought match.

Game 1 : John Bell & Fraser Russell won 3&2 and set the ball rolling.

Game 2 : Kenny McGeachy & John Shanks won 2&1, Kenny who recently went through a painful surgical procedure was grateful it didn’t rain more.

Game 3 : Norrie Cloughley & Ian Muir had the game well under control until their opponents started to hole putts, but they girded their loins and fought hard to come in with a 4&2 win.

Game 4 : Alistair McVittie & Jim Robertson battled right to the 18th. and were unlucky to lose 1 down.

Game 5 : John Dickson & Tom Nisbet also contested the game right to the 18th. and won 1 up.

As a result of ALL the Seniors’ Team Members hard fought endeavours, for the first time we have reached the play offs, so a big thanks to all who took part this year.

John Bell

Seniors’ Team Manager.

Verti-Draining Weekend beginning 3rd July.

Ladies and Gentlemen any of you who have played this year will realise our greens are slower than a snail on beta blockers. The problem for this is years of thatch which have built up under the surface and are stopping good growth and drainage. The main way to deal with this is to get oxygen down to this layer to let the aerobic bacteria decompose the thatch. I know I sound like David Bellamay and may have his build but these are the facts.
To assist in improving the greens they will be Verti-Drained on Friday and left open over the weekend without a top dressing. This will leave the greens like swiss cheese and a little uneven but my advice is to ignore the small holes and aim for the big one!
Yours in golf
Alan R Smith
Secretary.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP & JAMES GRAY MEMORIAL RESULTS.

On a beautiful Saturday morning when many wish they had sun block in their bags the Club Championship and James Gray Memorial was fought out in a friendly style. Congratulations to our new Club Champion Kevin Loughrie who with two rounds of 68 showed his class over the 36 holes. Second and third places were Alan Fordyce and Stuart Geddes respectively but no one could argue with the winners result of 4 under par.

The James Gray Memorial for lowest nett score went to young Stuart Mitchell who is going from strength to strength and is one to watch for the future.

Date for your Diary:- Thursday 2nd July.

Cambuslang Gents Team lost their away tie to Hamilton Golf Club 6.5 points to 3.5 Points on Thursday 25th June. Wins by Paul Foy, Shaun Philbin and Stuart Geddes and a half point from Colin Kerr were not enough against a strong Hamilton Team who are likely winners of the league.

The final match of the season takes place at home to Strathaven on Thursday 2nd July. This is a must win for Cambuslang to avoid relegation and it is requested that as many as possible attend to support the Team. For a Nine hole course to have a team in the 1st Division is an accomplishment and the boys have done us proud in reaching this level. When I say boys I am referring to Shaun, Scott and Brian. The rest are ancient.

Talking of ancient our Team Captains and Match Secretary, Alan Leonard and Keith Taylor deserve a vote of thanks.

Please put Thursday 2nd July 2015 in your diary. Tee off from 5:15 and lets support the boys in their fight at the highest level.
